JOHN T. VAN DEURZEN, P.E.

 

STRUCTURAL ENGINEER

 

 

    Mr. Van Deurzen received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1972 and his Master of Science degree in Structural Engineering in 1973 from the University of Wisconsin. After graduation, Mr. Van Deurzen joined Black and Veatch, Consulting Engineers, as a staff structural engineer where he was responsible for the design of numerous elements of power generation facilities - specializing in the design of mass concrete turbine generator foundations. In 1974, Mr. Van Deurzen joined Lutz, Daily and Brain, Consulting Engineers, where as a project structural engineer he was responsible for the design and construction coordination of a number of large industrial projects including a water distribution station and a 150 and 200 megawatt power generation station. In 1979, Mr. Van Deurzen joined Harper and Kerr, Consulting Structural Engineers, as a project structural engineer where he was responsible for the design and construction coordination of numerous commercial and light industrial projects which included high-rise apartments, manufacturing facilities, restaurants, schools, office buildings and other structures.

 

    In August of 1983, Mr. Van Deurzen formed Van Deurzen and Associates, P.A. where, as principal engineer, he is responsible for providing timely and professional engineering services in the fields of structural design, project and construction management, failure analysis, investigations, rehabilitation, and code compliance review to name just a few.

 

    Mr. Van Deurzen is, and has been, involved in numerous professional societies and organizations. He has served on the board and as president of the Kansas Chapter of the American Concrete Institute; and has served on national committees of the American Concrete Institute. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Midwest Concrete Industry Board. In addition to the American Concrete Institute and the Midwest Concrete Institute Board Mr. Van Deurzen is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, International Conference of Building Code Officials, BOCD, SSBCO, ADA and the Masonry Society. He has also served as a member of the Johnson County Community College Construction and Maintenance Technology Advisory Committee and has taught Construction Management at the College. Mr. Van Deurzen has served as the Acting Codes Administrator for the cities of Westwood and Westwood Hills, Kansas.

 

    Mr. Van Deurzen has extensive experience in numerous types of commercial, institutional, industrial and governmental projects as well as in residential construction using the model building codes including the Uniform Building Code, the BOCA Basic/National Building Code, and the Standard Building Code, and with all types of building materials such as reinforced concrete, structural steel, wood, light-gage metal framing and both reinforced and un-reinforced masonry.

 

    Mr. Van Deurzen has served, or is currently serving, as expert witness in litigation concerning the effects of blasting on residential structures, foundation settlement due to poor construction, building code violations, structural failure due to poor design, and structural failure due to soil instability.
